Miss Merrill's Class's Week in Review 3/16/09

Here is my podcast! I added text to a couple of my pictures. I used this to add sort of a title to the different sections of my podcast. My students wrote summaries based off of our subjects & we made our week in review so I titled some pics with text like, "Conferences," "Writing," "Math," etc. Making it was totally fine and not too frustrating (recording with students can be maddening at times! :) ) however, navigating around podbean and whatnot was difficult but I figured it out! :) I will embed the video when I can get a code! :)

My Wonderful Websites

This is one of my webpages that my students use on a daily basis... :)

Here is my QUIA account. My kids LOVE battleship!

And finally, my last website is a "Go Green" website. With Earth Day approaching, I do a "Green" writing project and we make an art project out of all recycled materials. SO, knowing how geeky I am about recycling (my whole class totally knows), I build up my class about recycling and we do it all year. So I have them see "How Green You Are" with this checklist:

Oral Presentation iMovie

Here is my iMovie on giving Oral Presentations. This is a tested standard for my 6th graders so I thought this would be a great opportunity to introduce the presentations- especially since I video tape them presenting!! :)

My Podcast Subscription

I subscribed to "Stuff You Should Know." This caught my attention first because my boyfriend is totally into all the shows like, "How It's Made" and "Loggers" or whatever that second one is called where it features a crew cutting down trees and selling the lumber. ANYWAY!, there is some cool stuff on here that would totally be great topics for my class. I am sad I didn't have this before because my class just did a writing project on Friday the 13th and there was a podcast about the "facts" behind the superstition. Anyway, that was my subscription for now... probably more to come! :)

Teacher Tube Pick...

I chose the video, "From an F to an A" to post because it was A) made by kids so it is easy to relate to if I showed this to my students, B) a great idea to use for a struggling student in Math, and C) the acting made me giggle sometimes! :) I liked this video because I can show it to my students and most of all, USE! I like the idea of "World Math Day" and didn't even know such a thing existed until I visited teacher tube. What a great way for studnets to connect to others around the world!?!? It also incorporates technology with the use of a computer for math and my students struggle with motivation for math so this was great! :)

My Introduction

My name is Katie Merrill. I am a 6th grade teacher at Liberty Elementary in Omaha, Nebraska. My school is a part of the Omaha Public Schools district (OPS). This is NOT where I saw myself working when I was asked at Creighton University. I went to Millard Public Schools (in Omaha) my entire K-12 career and always thought I would be there. However, now that I am where I am at, I would not change my current working place for the world! I love where I am and love the students that I teach. Funny how life works, huh?

I have completely grown up in the technology age. I have been around computers for what seems my whole life. I am very comfortable with computers, however, the more of these classes I take, the more I am convinced that I will never know it enough! Until I became a teacher, I was totally a "Windows girl." My parents had XP throughout high school and college and it was what I was comfortable with and knew. However, when OPS gave me this Mac laptop, it was easy to learn how to maneuver and learn the short cut keys also and I have fallen in love! Whenever I go use my parents' Windows, I get frustrated that some command keys that make my typing quick, do not work on that computer! :( The version of Office I am using was copywritten in 2004. I am not sure what "version" that is, but the year is correct! :)

Truly, was "inspired" me to get my Master's was my mother's nagging. :) See, my sister had gone through the program and was loving all the benefits she was getting from it- bot intrinsic and extrinsic. My mom knew that I would benefit from it too so she pushed. And pushed, and pushed, and pushed! Finally, I agreed to enroll and have been thankful ever since. This truly does give us more insight to being a better teacher and learning more and more knowledge that will only benefit my current and future students also. With my degree, I plan to push myself as a teacher as well as my students to show them that learning never stops.
